Berkeley Formula Racing designs and builds a Formula SAE car from scratch every season. Its internal-combustion team asked for that car, their own B25, as a kit small enough to hold.

A Formula SAE team builds an entire racing car from nothing, every season, with students who also have degrees to finish. A season of engineering ends up in a machine that exists for a very specific moment in time: one competition season, one car, one team's work. When the season ends, what remains is the engineering experience, the photographs, the stories, and usually a car that belongs to that particular moment in the team's history. Typical sponsor merchandise solves a different problem. A branded shirt can carry a logo; it doesn't necessarily capture the thing the team actually spent a year building.

Berkeley Formula Racing's internal-combustion team had seen the model we'd previously built for Formula Electric at Berkeley, and wanted their own car, the B25, done the same way. The car they wanted modelled is a real, raced, engineered machine, designed and built by the same team now being asked to judge the model. That makes for a particularly unforgiving review panel: these are people who know their car down to the details. So the model was built to the B25 specifically, in Cal blue and gold, carrying the team's own number and the Cal wordmark on printed elements rather than stickers.
